Surfers with the Bug know they have to put in the the extra hours at the gym, running, laps in the pool, home workouts or stretching if they want to surf well when the waves are firing.

The actual amount of time riding a wave is surprisingly short—bad waves 5-10 seconds—good waves 15 -30 seconds, depending on the break. Surfers spend more time paddling and duck diving than surfing itself, which can be exhausting. Every surfer knows the feeling of paddling out just as a set rolls in, especially when its 4ft +. All of sudden you're gassed and you haven't even caught a wave yet.
Hence the training, but rather doing big workouts, find a routine that you can manage consistently. In my opinion, it's better to do a little everyday than a lot 2-3 times a week.
When you've got the bug, motivation to surf better isn't a problem
